Latino Review on "The Spirit" Movie: F

Reviewed by: Ron Henriques - 12.18.08

2008 has been an interesting year for movies, but what makes me laugh is that what may be the best and worst films of the year are comic book movies. Everyone knows what a sensation 'The Dark Knight' (and lets not forget 'Iron Man') was, earning not just the biggest box-office, but the highest praise from even critics who normally don't like the superhero genre. I think you know where I'm going with this so I'm just going to come out and say it. Frank Miller's 'The Spirit' is a piece of crap. And that's just me being nice because I'm not talking about the crap you may get on your shoe due to some fool who forgot to properly dispose of his chewing gum. I'm talking about the crap that each of us flushes every morning, 'Cept with all the advertising and TV ads we've seen for this flick over the past several months, this crap won't flush away easily.

I won't bore you with too many details or jokes because my job is to inform you on the quality of a feature, not do stand-up comedy. 'The Spirit' is a film that no matter how bad it looked or how bad I heard it was I still went into with an open mind. I wound up getting my mind blown and not in the fashion I like. This film is a complete mess from frame one and not even worth the film it was recorded on which should be burned immediately to save the participants from further embarrassment.

Deborah Del Prete on Superheroes (Conde Naste Portfolio)

"Our society is in a dark place, but these are heroes that save us. You may call Batman, Iron Man and the Spirit antiheroes, but at the end of the day they're protecting us at a time when there's a lot of fear. There's terrorism, there's a war on, and when these comic book heroes began, and when The Spirit was written, there was a war on."

— Deborah Del Prete, executive producer of Frank Miller's Will Eisner's The Spirit movie, due out December 25, 2008. She is quoted in a Conde Nast Portfolio magazine story, "Superheroes Save Hollywood! (Barely.)," by Fred Schruers.

Gene Colan, MARVEL COMICS legendary artist: Mr. Media Interview

Anybody who tells you that one comic book looks just like the next doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

It doesn’t take much effort to tell Jack Kirby’s blocky drawings from Steve Ditko’s otherworldly stylings, for example, or, in more modern terms, the dark, detailed pencils of Frank Miller from the brighter, livelier sketches of Jim Lee.

And few of those guys produce anything like the work of “Gentleman” Gene Colan.

Colan’s contribution to the industry date back to the 1940s, but he was one of the artists who, in the 1960s and ‘70s, defined Marvel Comics and characters such as Daredevil, Dracula, Iron Man, and even Howard the Duck. His richly drawn images looked like they took a lot longer to do and required much more care and patience than those of many of his contemporaries.

Put another way, you could escape into a Gene Colan 32-page comic for a lot longer than you could someone else’s books.

It is an honor and a pleasure to welcome Gene Colan to Mr. Media today.

Hollywood Reporter

Lionsgate has moved up the nationwide release of its comic adaptation "The Spirit" -- written and directed by Frank Miller -- to Dec. 25.

The film, based on the comic book series created by the late Will Eisner, was originally slated to open Jan. 16, 2009.

Also slated to open on Dec. 25 are Disney's "Bedtime Stories" and Fox 2000 Pictures' "Marley & Me."

Of the move, Lionsgate president of theatrical films Tom Ortenberg said: "Comic-Con fans (in New York in March) resoundingly confirmed what we felt in our bones about 'The Spirit': this is a great film and an irresistible piece of entertainment. ... For all of us, it was an easy decision."

"The Spirit" stars Gabriel Macht, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Sarah Paulson, Stana Katic, Dan Lauria, Jaime King, Paz Vega and Louis Lombardi. Odd Lot Entertainment and Lionsgate are production partners.

International release dates have not yet been announced. Sony Pictures Releasing International is handling distribution in many European territories and Latin America. Odd Lot International is distributing to the rest of the world, except for the U.K. and Australia, where the film is being released by Lionsgate.
