12 Questions With Eva Mendes (Moviefone)

{{fr|Eva Mendes à l'avant-première de Live ! d...Image via Wikipedia

In 'The Spirit,' she's Sand Saref, a jewel thief so hot she can melt the hearts of the undead -- namely the eponymous crime fighter (Gabriel Macht). Eva Mendes dished with Moviefone about re-teaming with Scarlett Johansson, why she has no problem with artistic nudity ... and why she thinks certain body parts should be in proportion.

Frank Miller gets in 'The Spirit' (Jam! Showbiz)

Comic-book icon channels The Spirit of his mentor in latest film
By -- Sun Media

NEW YORK -- Apart from Marvel's Stan Lee, if there is a figure who represents the link between the comic books of old and the movies coming to a theatre near you, it's Frank Miller.

The artist-writer, who gave us 300, Sin City and the Dark Knight incarnation of Batman, began his career in the colourfully ink-stained New York-based cauldron of comic-book art, mentored by the likes of Jim Shooter, Neal Adams -- but most of all, the legendary and prolific Will Eisner.

Theirs was a strange, combative relationship -- one in which Miller is finally getting the last word, three years after Eisner's death, making his solo directorial debut with a stylized movie of Eisner's signature noir hero from the '40s, The Spirit. Wherever he is, the female-form-obsessed Eisner must appreciate the casting -- Scarlett Johansson (Silken Floss), Eva Mendes (Sand Saref) and Jaime King (Lorelei), all playing various forms of femmes fatale tormenting our mordant hero (Gabriel Macht).

"The Spirit" inspires us to talk femme fatales (AfterEllen.com)

Christmas day is just around the corner, and you know what that means: ribbons, tags, packages, boxes, bags — and the release of half a dozen much-hyped, mega-budget films. Among them is the movie adaptation of Will Eisner's The Spirit. It doesn't have any Nazis, puppies or backward-aging babies, but it promises killer performances from a bevy of women who want nothing more than seduction and destruction.

Scarlett Johansson plays Silken Floss, a frigid vixen; Eva Mendes plays Sand Saref, a conniving jewel thief; and Jaime King plays Lorelei, a phantom siren.

Of course, no superhero's tale would be complete without the quick-witted girl next door. To balance out Spirit's femme fatales is the police commissioner's daughter, Ellen Dolan, played by out actress Sarah Paulson.

Frank Miller & Cast Get into Spirit of 'The Spirit' (Newsarama.com)

HOLLYWOOD - DECEMBER 17: (L-R) Actor Samuel L...Image by Getty Images via DaylifeBy Lucas Siegel
17 December 2008

The NYC-inspired "Central City" is character in of-itself in comic book legend Will Eisner's seminal work The Spirit. So perhaps it was appropriate that when it was time for cast and crew to gather for a press event promoting Frank Miller's solo-directorial debut big screen adaptation of the comic book, they descended on New York City, rather than the more suburban metropolis that is Hollywood.

Present at the weekend press conference was Miller, along with star Gabriel Macht [The Spirit], Eva Mendes [Sand Saref], Scarlett Johansson [Silken Floss], Samuel L. Jackson [The Octopus], Dan Lauria, [Commissioner Dolan], and Sarah Paulson [Ellen Dolan]. The stars took their seats, and the questions began.

Question: Gabriel, this seems to be your big breakthrough, can you talk about your experience playing The Spirit? And Scarlett, how did you come into this role?

Gabriel Macht: My name is Gabriel Macht, I play El Spirito [laughs]. In many ways, any part you get as an actor has the potential for breaking through, and I feel like I’ve done a bunch of those in my career, but honestly this one happens to have the biggest potential because I’m involved with Frank’s vision of the film. There’s no greater opportunity for a younger actor than to play The Spirit, and I had the best time working on the film, so hopefully people come and see it and we can make a couple more!

Scarlett Johansson: I’m Scarlett Johansson, and I play Silken Floss...

Frank Miller: [interrupts] Doesn’t she make that sound great? [laughter from the audience]

Mendes on rehab, film, celebrity (FreeP.com)

Eva MendesImage by i.say via Flickr

The L.A.-born, Cuban-American actress and model Eva Mendes ("We Own the Night") is very nice on the eyes, and a very interesting read, too. The alluring celeb -- who plays Sand Saref, the childhood sweetheart of hero Denny Colt in "The Spirit," an adaptation of Will Eisner's 1940s comic book series -- talks about her stint this year in rehab, movies and life as a celeb in the Dec./Jan. issue of Latina, which hits newsstands Tuesday.

On fame: "I admire any woman who has made it in this business and hasn't lost her marbles. It's really difficult to be successful and have longevity. And I don't mean box office hits; I mean truly being a working actress and keeping your personal life intact."

On rehab: "It's a part of my life that I don't feel like I need to explain. There's just a lot of things that were out there that are 2% true, but I don't wish to give it attention. It's as basic as this -- as long as my mom still looks at me with that little sparkle, I'm fine."

The Daily Record, UK

THIS is the rear view that has been giving Eva Mendes sleepless nights ahead of the premiere of her latest movie.

The actress bares her bum in the adaptation of Will Eisner's 1940s comic book The Spirit.

Eva admitted stripping for her role as cat burglar Sand Saref made her nervous.

She said: "I'm excited to see what happens with this scene. Well, I don't think it's 'excited' - I'm actually nervous.

"I think they have a butt shot of me. I'm not sure how it ended up."

Deborah Del Prete on the life and loves of 'The Spirit' (Comics2Film.com)

November 20, 2007

Deborah Del Prete, CEO and Partner of Odd Lot Entertainment, is currently Producing Will Eisner's 'The Spirit'. During our recent visit to the set, amidst a rush of activity including a closed rehearsal and shooting various scenes between the Spirit and the Octopus, Del Prete was able to take some time to speak to us about 'The Spirit' and how she helped bring the project to life.

As Producer Del Prete has been involved with 'The Spirit' from its initial development stages nearly seven years ago to the current production and will continue on through post-production.

In terms of the story Del Prete says that, "Sand Saref stories are a major component." How developed is the story? "It's the Frank Miller version, it's very developed…it's not an origin story, but there will be origin revealed in it."

The story takes place in a contemporary world, but it's not specific in terms of time and place, "There is no period. Central City is its own world. It's not New York. It's a city that's anyplace, someplace in time. People have cell phones. It's kind of a everywhere, nowhere anytime."

What happened to you Frank? (Rob Tornoe)

On his blog, Rob Tornoe lets it be known he's not too happy with Frank Miller's direction on "Will Eisner's The Spirit":

So "the Goddamn Batman" writer Frank Miller is directing the new Spirit movie staring Gabriel Macht...fine.

The over-used and increasing tiring Eva Mendes is playing femme fatale Sand Saref...whatever.

So why on gods green earth is Frank Miller directing in front of a green screen for?!?!?! Doesn't The Spirit take place in a noirish urban landscape? Do we really need Lucas-like special effects on this one?!?!

MTV MovieBlog Talks to Eva Mendes

Eva Mendes Has ‘The Spirit’

Eva Mendes

Most first-time directors would consider themselves fortunate to land Jamie Kennedy and Mo’Nique for their debut effort. But now that the training wheels (named Rodriguez and Tarantino) are coming off for the legendary Frank Miller with “The Spirit,” A-listers are lining up like Motley Crue fans at a leather pants sale.

“I’m excited to be working with Frank Miller, he’s a genius,” Eva Mendes told us recently, nearly jumping out of her chair. “Actually, I didn’t even read a script.”

Thanks to his graphic novels and movie adaptations of “300” and “Sin City” (which credited him as one of three co-directors), the Miller “look” has been well-established. But, in adapting the Sunday morning comic strip launched by Will Eisner in 1940, the feel of a full-on Miller production remains to be seen.

“[Miller] wrote the script as well,” beamed Mendes, who’ll star in the film alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Jaime King, Gabriel Macht and a certain red-hot redhead. “When I first met with him, it was actually me and Scarlett Johansson — we got there at a similar time. We actually sat down and we met with Frank together. It was fantastic, and I was just like ‘Look, I don’t even know what the script is, but I want to work with you’.”

In a few short weeks, the “We Own the Night” star will get her wish. “I play Sand Saref,” she explained. “It’s my first femme fatale character. She’s literally a killer, and she uses her body to get what she wants. I’m excited!”

Those who list Mendes as one of the sexiest women in Hollywood are, no doubt, every bit as thrilled to hear such hot details about the 2009 release. “I loved ‘Sin City’ and ‘300,’ and I love working with creative geniuses,” she gushed. “That brain of his, it’s like, ‘What’s going on in there?’”
