Christopher Couch and Stephen Weiner € Will Eisner¹s Personal Appearances € Will Eisner in the News € Will Eisner Links EDITOR¹S NOTE Here¹s a profile of Will Eisner that slipped by me in August ‹ and I wrote it! It ran in the Fall 2004 ³Prime Time,² a supplement to the B¹nai B¹rith Magazine. The headline is ³The Jewish Avenger Strikes Back² and the story is roughly 1,000 words. What sets it apart from most profiles you¹ve read about Will is the preview information about his Spring 2005 graphic novel, The Plot. NEW IN BOOKSTORES: The Will Eisner Companion The Will Eisner Companionis the first comprehensive, critical overview of the work of this legendary writer/artist. Divided into two sections ‹ his Spirit work and his graphic novels ‹ this authorized companion features all-new critical and historical essays by noted comics historians N.C. Christopher Couch and Stephen Weiner, as well as alphabetical indexes relating to all aspects and characters in his oeuvre. Also includes a chronology, a bibliography and suggested reading lists, as well as an introduction by Dennis O'Neil. But the medium is only now starting to earn respect in literary circles. The last few years have ushered several talented graphic novelists into the mainstream, such as Daniel Clowes and Joe Sacco. Charles McGrath,a former editor of the New York Times Book Review, described the genre as ³what novels used to be: an accessible, vernacular form with mass appeal.² Loyal readers sniff that graphic novels‹sometimes described as sequential art or comix‹are hailed as the next big thing every five years or so, but never quite catch on, and are often banished to areas of bookshops reserved for humour or science fiction. Just like a certain Caped Crusader, The Spirit wore a mask and valiantly protected his city from the criminal element. However, unlike Batman, The Spirit did not have a personal fortune to fund his crusade. The Spirit protected his city armed only his two fists and a desire to make his hometown a better place. Also unlike Batman, there has never been a "Spirit" feature film. Michael Uslan hopes to change that. CBR News recently spoke to Uslan, the man in charge of bringing The Spirit's adventures from the printed page to the silver screen. Peter Sanderson goes in-depth on The Incredibles FilmForce The Iron Giant has ties to the superhero genre itself. Hogarth shows the Giant his comics collection, including issues of Superman and Will Eisner's The Spirit. (Sitting in the theater in 1999, I reflected that 99.9% of the movie's audience would never have heard of The Spirit, and admired Bird for including this homage nonetheless.)
