IN THIS ISSUE: € Eisner-inspired Director Brad Bird Wins Academy Award for ³The Incredibles² € PS Magazine Publishes Eisner Tribute € Will Eisner Works to be Published in Hungary € Will Eisner Links Don¹t believe the connection? Check it out: BRAD BIRD: "I started getting into the Spirit after reading an interview with William Friedkin and was amazed by how cinematic the character was. My first love has always been movies, and it struck me as a comic-strip version of 'Citizen Kane.' "The angles were tremendous and the lighting was dramatic. It was even arranged on the page that was cinematic. Panels were not just broken up into geometric squares, they were longer, shorter and abrupt with a feeling of almost movielike timing. "And I think this was one of the first comic strips to do that, and I love the fact that Will Eisner had all of the draftsmanship that one would look for but wasn't afraid to get broad or cartoony with some of the expressions. "I also tipped my hat to Mr. Eisner's work in 'Iron Giant.' The kid pulls out stuff that the giant would enjoy seeing, and he pulls out a copy of the Spirit. I thought that not a lot of people know about this and it is a great thing. "I think Will Eisner is a genius...² The Washington Times ³¹Incredibles¹ creator eyes superheroes¹ home lives² Interview by Joseph Szadkowski http://washingtontimes.com/arts/20041022-090900-7146r.htm ³ The masks the Incredibles wear are little stuck-on things, just like the ones worn by comic-book god Will Eisner¹s the Spirit.² New York Magazine ³Animate This: ŒThe Incredibles¹ Movie Review² By Ken Tucker http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/movies/reviews/10249/ ³The blue outfit and mask work by the dad in The Incredibles movie is director Brad Bird¹s tip of the hat to the Spirit...² ³The Spirit of Will Eisner² By Michael Dooley http://voice.aiga.org/content.cfm?ContentAlias=_getfullarticle&aid=916503 PS MAGAZINE PUBLISHES EISNER TRIBUTE ³I just perused your latest Eisner newsletter and got to thinking that you might like to share the attached image in your next edition. This will appear in the briefs page of our March issue of PS, which is due from the printer at the end of this week. This marks a first for us! This is the first tribute like this to appear in PS that I know of. But we couldn't let this opportunity go by, as we owe so much to Will's early work at PS. It so happened that Will had sent an original full-color cartoon to us upon the occasion of our 50th anniversary. We were able to scan it and send it to Joe Kubert and Pete Carlsson, who then took it to the two-color look needed for that issue of PS. The art was perfect for this kind of tribute, as you'll see. The words that were added are mine. ³I'm looking so very forward to your book's debut this summer!² Cordially, Stuart Henderson PS Magazine WILL EISNER WORKS TO BE PUBLISHED IN HUNGARY ³The very first Will Eisner comic to be published in Hungary is an episode of the Spirit named "Wanted", originally published on July 6, 1947. I came upon it in the Spirit reprint issue number 19 published by Denis in 1986. It will appear in the first issue of a brand new quarterly comic magazine called "Fekete-Fehér", that is, Black and White, at the end of March. ³We are planning to run at least one more Spirit story later this year as well as "A small business", a 3-page story that was originally published in 1978.² ³We do have a website at www.mivesceh.hu, but there is precious little info on the comic magazine as of yet. We have a partner who will be selling the magazine online.² Tony Bayer BRAZILIAN PLAY BASED ON EISNER¹S ³DROPSIE AVENUE² Diego Oliveira de Assis writes from Brazil that Felipe Hirsch has written a play based on Will Eisner¹s ³Dropsie Avenue² graphic novel. Here¹s the Babelfish translation of a story about the play: Dropsie avenue, of Will Eisner, in teatral assembly For Marko Ajdaric, responsible for the Neorama (17/02/2005) Philip Hirsch, one of the dramaturgos that the Brazilian tradition of the inquietude keeps, carried through an ample research on Will Eisner to arrive at the assembly of Dropsie Avenue, and a teatral spectaclederivative, Sketchbook call. The part enters in scene in daily pay-estréia in the Popular Theater of the SESI, in São Paulo, in 19 days 18 and, from 20h. Hirsch, director of the Subtle Cia of Theater, thus, steals a precious time of the great project of its first incursion in the cinema: the long-metragem Insolation, based on texts of the writer Sam Lipsyte and dramaturgo Will Eno, both of the new American generation. The choice of the subject, based on Dropsie Avenue: The Neighborhood, discloses a choice for an approach for the side most personal of Will Eisner, therefore graphic novel accurately is considered of most personal of the brilliant American quadrinhista. In, Eisner not only counts, to its fashion, on 120 years of social changes in New York, using itself of dialogues and situations established between the inhabitants of a building, as it finishes if being valid it knowledge local it where it passed good part of its infancy, the quarters of the Bronx and Brooklyn, in New York. The assembly promises to use itself this concurrence of the dialogues of the inhabitants, with the addition of good doses of lyricism. Some parts of the stage take names that strengthen this perspective: Windows, Walls, Farewells, Fidiciary offices, Subways, Small Miracles and Notations on People of the City. Philip Hirsch so took serious the its work that finished generating material for one second assembly, Sketchbook, from rough drafts, notations and drawings made during the assays of Dropsie Avenue. Without a doubt, one is about a deeply authorial teatral workmanship, that goes to be in the history of the relation between quadrinhos and theater, in our country. Before passing to the details of the sequence of the presentations, valley to remember that the SESI, besides keeping the Popular Theater, guarantees the permanence of Gibiteca SESI, in one of the points of more easy access of the São Paulo capital (Trianon/MASP Subway). After the daily pay-estréia, the part will be in poster of 10 of March up to 2 of June, the fourth and thursday, also with beginning to 20h, frank entrance. The ticket office opens in one hour of antecedence and only distributes an ingression for person. The spectacle is indicated for greaters of 14 years. The Popular Theater of the SESI, inaugurated in September of 2004, is in the Street Carlos Weber, 835 - Leopoldina Village - Is Paulo/SP. To reserve its seat, the telephone is 0XX-11-3146-7396.
