DC COMICS ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT!
Newsarama's Matt Brady broke big news from Comic-Con International in San Diego today: DC Comics will return Will Eisner's beloved and groundbreaking comics character The Spirit to monthly publication in all new adventures beginning in 2006. The new comic will be written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke ("New Frontier"). Read the whole story here.
DC ALSO ANNOUNCES A CROSSOVER ADVENTURE BETWEEN THE SPIRIT... AND BATMAN! !
In a separate report, Brady also reported that Jeph Loeb, who is scripting the upcoming big screen, live action adaptation of The Spirit, will write a Batman/The Spirit one-shot story that will be published in December 2005. Brady has all the details, including extensive quotes from the participants, which you can read here .
WE: ASL EXCERPT: EXCLUSIVE BACKGROUND STORY ON BATMAN/THE SPIRIT... FROM DENNY O'NEIL!
I was a little surprised by today's announcement, but not entirely. In one of the many interviews I did with Eisner for my upcoming biography, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life (M Press, September 9, 2005), I addressed the issue of what would become of The Spirit once he was gone. After all, one of the hallmarks of the man's career was the way he scrupulously maintained and protected the rights to the character for more than 60 years, only letting The Spirit wander off to other creators in The Spirit Jam, Dave Sim's The Cerebus Jam, Kitchen Sink's The New Adventures of The Spirit and, a few months ago, Michael Chabon's The Escapist.
The behind-the-scenes stories of all of those projects are in A Spirited Life. You can read them when you buy the book. (That's a hint, folks.) But I do want to share this brief excerpt from the book, because you should know that teaming The Spirit with Batman isn't a new idea. It was actually a dream project pursued for years by long-time Batman writer and editor Denny O'Neil. Here's an excerpt from Will Eisner: A Spirited Life:
Longtime DC Comics Batman editor and writer Denny O'Neil admired Eisner's Spirit characterization over the years because it remained consistent; more than just being about the title character, the comic became a way of telling stories. "The reason I preferred Batman," he said, "was that he was also a great vehicle for telling stories, and there were more stories you could tell with Batman than someone who was three degrees less powerful than God. Maybe that was something I picked up from reading Eisner when I was a little kid."
When Kitchen Sink Press was Eisner's publisher, O'Neil and Eisner talked about telling a story in which Eisner's Spirit would meet Batman. "It would not be us directly working together, but for me to write a story wherein Batman meets the Spirit," O'Neil said. "It intimidated me--I'm going to do Eisner's Spirit? Right. But he seemed okay with it."
O'Neil met with a Kitchen Sink editor and they talked about possible formats, whether it would be a mini-series or a long graphic novel. When Kitchen Sink imploded and DC acquired rights to the Eisner graphic novels and The Spirit reprints, the talks continued. "It was one of those projects that everybody thinks is a good idea but there was no compelling reason to do it," O'Neil said.

AUTHOR OF WE: ASL PENS INTRODUCTION TO DC'S THE SPIRIT ARCHIVES, VOL. 17!
One of the nicest things that has happened to me lately was being asked to write the introduction for the next edition of DC Comics' The Spirit Archives, Vol. 17, which ships in October 2005.
WHAT'S IN WILL EISNER: A SPIRITED LIFE?
Will Eisner is a founding father of two American mediums: comic books (The Spirit) and graphic novels (A Contract With God). Will Eisner: A Spirited Life is the biography of this master's life and work, often told in his own words and family photos.
Eisner trained some of the world's greatest comic art talent: Bob Kane (Batman); Jack Kirby (Fantastic Four); Jules Feiffer; Dave Berg (Mad); and Joe Kubert (Tarzan). Eisner also inspired generations of modern artists and writers, including Frank Miller (Sin City) Harlan Ellison, Brad Bird (The Incredibles) and Art Spiegelman (Maus).
Michael Chabon, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay was influenced by Eisner's career, wrote the stirring introduction for Will Eisner: A Spirited Life. Neal Adams also contributed an appreciation of his friend Eisner.
Author Bob Andelman conducted almost weekly interviews with Will Eisner. The book includes interviews with dozens of other familiar names in popular literature and graphic arts. Among those who spoke about either their personal experience with Eisner or the way in which he touched their careers were: Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Neil Gaiman, Denis Kitchen, Joe Kubert, Jim Warren, Stan Lee, Dave Sim, Patrick McDonnell.
