Will Eisner: A Spirited Life
By Bob Andelman
Will Eisner: A Spirited Life
eNewsletter No. 28
Working with Will Eisner's publishers at Dark Horse, DC and Norton, I put together the following compilation about the year since we lost Will and the year ahead. It is by no means complete - I just realized that Gary Chaloner's well-received "John Law" book isn't mentioned! - but it certainly demonstrates that interest in the master's work has only grown in his absence.
And my thanks to everyone who has already ordered and read my biography, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life - your enthusiasm has been much appreciated! I hope to meet more of you on Feb. 2 (7 p.m.) when I speak about Will's life and work at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco and at MegaCon in Orlando, Feb. 24-26, where I will be in Artist Alley as well as making a presentation, probably on Feb. 25.
Best,
Bob Andelman
-----------
It's hard to believe, but it will be a year on Jan. 3, 2006 since legendary comics artist and writer Will Eisner died suddenly in a South Florida hospital from complications following heart surgery. And considering the volume of projects released in the past year either created by or about the enduring master, it's especially hard to believe he's gone.
For example:
• The first full-length biography of the artist, WILL EISNER: A SPIRITED LIFE (M Press/Dark Horse) by Bob Andelman, was published in November. It features an introduction by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Wonder Boys) and an appreciation by celebrated artist Neal Adams. Among those contributing stories and anecdotes: Neil Gaiman, Jules Feiffer, Joe Kubert, Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Denis Kitchen, Denny O'Neil, Stan Lee and new president and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, Robert Iger, whose great-uncle Jerry Iger was Will Eisner's partner in the 1930s.
• THE CONTRACT WITH GOD TRILOGY (W.W. Norton), published in December, collected Eisner's groundbreaking first graphic novel, "A Contract With God," "A Life Force" and "Dropsie Avenue" and included new illustrations.
• DC Comics released THE BEST OF THE SPIRIT, also in December, a collection of classic stories from Eisner's 1940s costumed detective. These were originally distributed to more than 5 million Sunday newspaper readers. Novelist Neil Gaiman (Anansi Boys, American Gods) wrote the book's introduction.
• THE SPIRIT ARCHIVES, VOL. 17, was published in November. The introduction is by Eisner biographer Bob Andelman.
• In November, COMIC BOOK ARTIST MAGAZINE published its largest issue ever, 252 pages, devoted entirely to Eisner. Among those remembering his influence upon them: John Updike and Art Spiegelman.
• The International Comic Arts Festival (Oct. 13-15) devoted an entire day of scholarly review and discussion to Eisner's life and works.
• Two documentaries about Eisner's life and work debuted at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July. These included: WILL EISNER: THE SPIRIT OF A PIONEER by Americans Andrew Cooke and Jon. B. Cooke; and WILL EISNER, PROFESSION: CARTOONIST by Brazilian Marisa Furtado.
• The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) in New York City offered the first-ever museum showing of Eisner's art, WILL EISNER: A RETROSPECTIVE, from May through September. .
• Eisner's final graphic novel, THE PLOT: THE SECRET STORY OF THE PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF ZION (W.W. Norton), was published in April to broad critical applause in the mainstream media. Novelist Peter David suggested Pulitzer consideration for EisnerÕs work.
• DROPSIE AVENUE, one of Eisner's earliest graphic novels, was brought to life on stage in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to excellent reviews.
In 2006, the number of new Eisner projects will continue unabated, from new comics and books to multiple museum gallery exhibitions and the annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards in San Diego in July.
A few examples of what's ahead: .
• Will Eisner's detective, The Spirit, will join the DC Universe in Summer 2006 with publication of BATMAN/THE SPIRIT, followed by an ongoing monthly comic book, THE SPIRIT.
• The MASTERS OF AMERICAN COMICS exhibit, which includes works by Eisner, Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman and Chris Ware, will move on from the Hammer Museum and MOCA in Los Angeles (through March 12) to the Milwaukee Art Museum (April 27-August 13), and then to the Jewish Museum in New York City and the Newark Museum in New Jersey (September 15, 2006-January 28, 2007).
• Eisner's French publisher, Editions Grasset & Fasquelle, will sponsorship an exhibition of 60 original pages from THE PLOT at the Mairie du 3¡ ardt ˆ Paris from Jan. 23 to Feb. 21.
• WILL EISNER'S NEW YORK will be the next hardcover graphic novel collection from W.W. Norton in October, 2006. It will feature an introduction by Neil Gaiman (Anansi Boys, American Gods). W.W. Norton will also begin publishing softcover editions of individual Eisner books in December 2006.
• Eisner biographer Bob Andelman will make presentations on WILL EISNER: A SPIRITED LIFE at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco (Feb. 2), MegaCon in Orlando (Feb. 25) and several other venues.
• Pre-production is already underway on a big budget film of THE SPIRIT, produced by Michael Uslan (Batman Begins, National Treasure).
• International editions of WILL EISNER: A SPIRITED LIFE will be announced soon.

ABOUT WILL EISNER: Pop culture would never have been the same without Will Eisner. Internationally recognized as the founding father of an utterly American mediumÑcomic booksÑEisner pioneered this art form in the late 1930s, and continued to shape its direction until his passing at 87 in 2005. This personality-driven biography, written by Bob Andelman, explores the fascinating life of Eisner and details a career that stretched over 70 years. Eisner spearheaded the cause of comics for adult readers (including 30 years spent producing comics for the U.S. Army and corporate clients such as General Motors and the United Nations) and in 1978 published the first widely recognized graphic novel, A Contract With God.
Eisner trained some of the worldÕs greatest comic art talent: Bob Kane (Batman); Jack Kirby (Fantastic Four); Jules Feiffer; Dave Berg (Mad); and Joe Kubert (Tarzan). Eisner also inspired generations of modern artists and writers, including Frank Miller (Sin City), Robert Crumb, Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman (Sandman, American Gods), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) Brad Bird (The Incredibles), Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) and Art Spiegelman (Maus).
"The Spirit," EisnerÕs most famous comics character is in pre-production as a major motion picture from Batman Begins producer Michael Uslan. And the Spirit will join the DC Comics Universe in December in an ongoing monthly title that will bring the character into the realm of Batman and Superman for the first time. The "Oscars" of the comic book world are the "Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards," have been given annually at San DiegoÕs Comic-Con International since 1987.
