Freddie E. Williams II, THE DC COMICS GUIDE TO DIGITALLY DRAWING COMICS artist: Mr. Media Radio Interview

I am old enough to remember what a sensation Stan Lee and John Buscema caused back in 1978 when the book, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, was published.

That book promised to pull back the curtain and teach would-be comic book artists how the House of Ideas did things and how you could, too.

But that was then—this is now. In the digital age, knowing how to hold a pencil is so 1999. If you want to make it in comics today, you need a lot more technical skills and information. And that, no doubt, is why Freddie E. Williams II is going to do very well with his timely new instructional book, The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics.

Williams is already on a bit of a roll, having worked on the DC miniseries Countdown, as well as Robin, The Flash and others. You can check out his work at his own website, FreddieArt.com.

Josh Keaton, SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, HERCULES voice actor: Mr. Media Radio Interview

I’ve been a fan of cartoons and superheroes for as long as I can remember—all the way back to the original "Space Ghost" cartoon in the ‘60s. Anybody else remember "Frankenstein, Jr." and "The Herculoids"?

Anyway, Josh Keaton is the voice of Disney XD’s “Spectacular Spider-Man, now in its second season and airing every Monday at 7:30 p.m. So of course I wanted him as a guest on Mr. Media.

In this latest cartoon incarnation of everyone’s favorite web-slinger, Keaton plays the teen-age Spidey. He’s still encountering and wisecracking with super-villains such as Doc Ock and Sandman, getting abused in high school by Flash Thompson and losing sleep over girls such as Betty Brant. And he still lives at home with dear old Aunt May.

For Keaton, who just turned 30, this isn’t even the role for which most people will recognize him. That would probably be “Hercules,” the Disney movie in which he played the God as a teen.

The People of the Comic Book: The Jewish Heroes Behind the Superheroes (ShalomTupelo.com)

Temple B'nai Israel: At this week’s seder, I mentioned that there was a connection between Passover and Superman, expecting maybe someone to know what I was talking about. Instead, there were blank stares. That’s what happens, I suppose, when you are a fanatic in a world of normal people.

In 2003, the theme for our son Jonathan’s bar mitzvah was The People of the Comic Book: The Jewish Heroes Behind the Superheroes. In posters, party favors, and especially in a small booklet I created, we told our guests how the superhero comic book world was built by Jewish businessmen and creators, and especially about how one of the world’s most iconic characters was created out of Jewish history and culture.

Following is the text of that booklet. It barely scratches the surface of this fascinating story, about which there are hundreds of books and articles, but for those who don’t know the story, it is a start.

DVD Review: Will Eisner: Profession: Cartoonist (Newsarama.com)

WILL EISNER: PROFESSION: CARTOONIST
(Image Entertainment)

With the arrival of The Spirit movie in theaters this week, no one should be surprised that a documentary about Will Eisner just hit the market. After all, the same thing already happened with Alan Moore (Mindscape of...). Can Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, you-name-‘em, be far behind?

The good news is this selection is well worth the effort. An American/Brazilian collaboration, this doc is divided into three key parts; Eisner’s roots and his work on The Spirit, his middle career and move into graphic novels and, finally, a solid analysis of his distinctive graphic style and importance to the industry/artform. Among those heavily interviewed are his wife Anne, Denis Kitchen, Stan Lee, Art Spiegelman and many, many other important colleagues he made through his long career.

The real “star” is Eisner himself, who apparently was quite generous with the documentarians, providing a number of interviews, a tour of his Ft. Lauderdale home and a generous sampling of the work he did over his 70 year career.
